don’t throw your life away because of the choices that i’ve made.

Darkness scares us. We yearn for the comfort of light as it provides shape and form allowing us to recognize, to define what’s before us. But what is it we’re afraid of, really? Not the darkness itself, but the truth we know hides within. - Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke.

I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.

It’s a cycle…

When things are great, we forget to remind ourselves that as perfect as it may seem, nothing is truly, completely perfect in the world. We appreciate happiness when it’s all too late. We feel one way, then wonder why we changed our minds later on. People assume that they know theirselves well because they know their favorites and their pet peeves… no. It is always easy to turn your back and walk away… but you’ll gradually make it to the bottom of the hill. Take a step back and think in depth. Thinking is generally not useful and harmful most of the time, or at least that’s what they all say, but thinking does it’s job; it is better to think than to regret. Ranting will make you feel better, or at least convince you mentally that you that it does, but it won’t get you anywhere. Don’t be a debbie downer, under any circumstances… if you want help, ask for it, don’t make a big deal about it. Also, wanting to be alone does not make you anti-social or an outcast… it just means it’s one of those days or you enjoy the time you spend alone. Some people need time alone to keep theirselves sane.

Happy 27th Birthday Emily
